Berlin, June 28, 2022 – Under the High Patronage of German Federal President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the Virchow Prize for Global Health will be awarded for the first time on October 15, 2022 in Berlin.

As a prestigious, international award, the Virchow Prize recognises outstanding achievements in the field of global health that are closely related to the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. The Virchow Prize is awarded to individuals, organisations and institutions who have made a significant contribution to strengthening global health through their work or lifetime achievements – be it through civil society, scientific, humanitarian, social or political commitment. The Virchow Prize is endowed with 500,000 euros and is awarded annually by the Virchow Foundation for Global Health.

It is essential that the international, interdisciplinary and multisectoral collaborations that address global health challenges receive our immense support. In this context, it is those who work tirelessly to improve the health of the world’s population that deserve recognition and respect at the highest level. The Virchow Prize, under the High Patronage of the German Federal President, promotes this awareness by anchoring the crucial importance of global health, above all, amongst the broader public,” says Professor Gerald Haug, Foundation President and President of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

With the Virchow Prize, the Virchow Foundation for Global Health raises awareness on the importance of health by honouring accomplishments that address the challenges in this field that are innovative and sustainable. The non-profit Foundation, based in Berlin and Münster, was established out of civil society commitment with the support of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and leading international experts in the field of global health. The Foundation aims to serve as an international platform to the global improvement of health in close connection with the World Health Summit.
