SUMMARY:International Urban Health Summit
DESCRIPTION:Experts will discuss solutions to promote urban health\, with a focus on urbanisation trends\, the role of national academies and the exchange of ideas from various research areas to improve the quality of life in cities at the International Urban Health Summit 2025 in Hanover from 9 to 11 April 2025. \nThis important summit is a project of the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften and Nationale Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina in close cooperation with The InterAcademy Partnership (IAP)\, Akademienunion and Virchow Foundation\, greatly supported by VolkswagenStiftung. \nOver 4.4 billion people globally live in urban areas and the urban population is predicted to reach 6.7 billion by 2050\, accounting for 70 percent of the world’s population. This poses social and environmental challenges that will have disproportionate impacts on the health and wellbeing of citizens\, especially of socially and economically disadvantaged communities. The varied and complex nature of urban life can complicate the development and introduction of plans and policies to promote urban health in a holistic manner. \nThe “International Urban Health Summit” as part of the Herrenhausen Conference series in Hanover\, Germany\, aims to bring together researchers and practitioners to address key issues of urban health through the lens of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. \nThe conference will foster interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange on various aspects of urban health\, including but not limited to: \n\nUrban Planning and Governance\nBuilt Enviroment and Urban Health\nNautural Enviroment\, Climate Change and Urban Health\nPublic Engagement and Urban Decision Making\nPublic Engagement in Urban Decision Making\nEducation and Social Determinants of Health\n\nInternational Urban Health Summit

SUMMARY:Save the date | One Sustainable Health Declaration
DESCRIPTION:The OSH Forum is based on transversal and multidisciplinary process driven by a community of experts (public and private operators and researchers)\, with the objective of identifying impactful operational programmes and pilot actions that can be funded. \nWith the organisation of transdisciplinary International Working Groups\, OHS Forum allows a plurality of actors concerned with global health (researchers\, operators\, regulators…) to be able to exchange constructively in order to formulate operational recommendations. \nThe OSH Forum approach consists in analysing\, among the primary global health issues\, the current disciplines and action programs\, in order to work on their transversality with the other complementary areas. The development of this approach without boundaries between the public and private sectors\, national and international players\, can be followed on the OSH Forum website. \nThe One Sustainable Health Forum is defined as an approach serving all actors contributing to the improvement of Global Health and its strong inclusion in the 2030 Agenda of the 2030 SDGs. It is a project of general interest\, abounding in valuable down-to-earth interchange\, the main purpose of which is to gather significant recommendations and initiate innovative actions in favour of one sustainable health for all.

SUMMARY:One Health | Preparedness\, partnerships and science to prevent systemic health risks
DESCRIPTION:Promoted by the One Europe for Global Health and hosted by ISGlobal Barcelona Institute for Global Health during the Spanish Presidency of the EU\, the meeting will focus on three key elements: Preparedness\, Partnerships and Science as keys to preventing health threats through the One Health approach. \nThe event will provide an opportunity to reflect on three key elements: \n\nThe role of science and research in public decision-making on global health.\nTo focus on the EU’s work on preparedness and response to health emergencies and how the One Health approach has been integrated.\nTo emphasise the need to deepen multi-stakeholder partnerships and alliances around the world\, particularly in the Global South.\n\nThe aim is then to feed these reflections into the public debate and\, in particular\, into EU policy-making on global health and One Health. To this end\, we are convening a group of experts who\, after an initial presentation by the organisers and promoters of the event\, will be able to exchange points of view. \nIf you are interested in attending the event\, please complete the registration form. \nThe upcoming Spanish Presidency to the Council of the European Union will offer a unique opportunity to bridge the north and south through the implication in the regional summit between the EU and the “… Community of Latin America and Caribbean states (CELAC) bringing together European\, Latin American and Caribbean leaders to strengthen relations between both regions. These summits are the main forums for dialogue and cooperation between Europe\, and Latin American and Caribbean states. \nThe One Europe for Global Health coalition aims to carry our message to the leaders present to stimulate awareness and catalyse concrete actions leveraging the conclusions of the One Sustainable Health for All Forum in July 2023. \nAmong the issues to be explored in depth during the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU\, it is worth highlighting a reflection on the strengthening and improvement of the health emergency preparedness and response system\, the importance of considering it as a fundamental element of the region’s strategic autonomy. This also includes the anchoring of decision making in scientific evidence\, with clear examples in issues such as immunisation\, antimicrobial resistance and the fight against HIV\, three aspects that have been identified as priorities in the Spanish Presidency’s agenda. Finally\, and related to the implementation of the EU Global Health Strategy\, the dialogue on the importance of the adoption of national strategies by the Member States for the implementation of the “One Health” perspective and the adoption of a common position for the reform of the global health governance system will be important.

SUMMARY:Breaking Down Barriers - Promoting partnerships between parliamentarians and academia
DESCRIPTION:During the WHS Regional Meeting 2023\, UNITE Parliamentarians Network is jointly with the Virchow Foundation organising a session in Washington to discuss the critical need to promote collaborations between academia and policymakers. The aim of this event is to explore ways to advance evidence-based health policies through effective partnerships. \nDate: 13th of April\nTime: 8:00 am to 9:00 am\nVenue: Washington Hilton\nRegistration link: >Link \nAccording to UNITE’s President\, Ricardo Baptista Leite\, “one of the key benefits of collaboration between policymakers and academia is the ability to develop and implement evidence-based interventions that are informed by high-quality research”. By working together\, policymakers and academics can leverage research evidence to design and implement public health policies and interventions that are tailored to the unique needs of their communities. This can lead to more effective interventions and significant improvements in public health outcomes. \nHowever\, effective collaboration between policymakers and academia requires a significant investment of time and resources. Academics must be willing to engage with policymakers and work collaboratively to identify solutions to complex public health challenges. They must also take responsibility for translating their research findings into policies and practices that have a real-world impact. Similarly\, policymakers must be open to collaborating with academics and willing to incorporate research evidence into their decision-making processes. \nIn this session\, policymakers such as Hon. Andrew Ullmann from Germany\, Hon. Akua Sena Dansua from Ghana\, and Hon. Ricardo Baptista Leite from Portugal will convene a discussion with participants on the way forward. This event provides a unique opportunity for participants to learn about successful examples of collaborations between policymakers and academics and to discuss ways to further promote such partnerships. \nJoin us for this event to engage in fruitful discussions and explore ways to advance evidence-based health policies through effective collaborations between academia and policymakers.

SUMMARY:Convergence on Global Health - Joint action with reference to the new EU Global Health Strategy
DESCRIPTION:Seminar “Convergence on Global Health – Joint action with reference to the new EU Global Health Strategy” the 9th of February 2023\, at Nobel Forum\, the building of the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm\, Sweden. \nThis half-day seminar is organized by Karolinska Institutet in the context of the Swedish presidency of the Council of the EU\, in dialogue with the Swedish Ministry of Health and Social Affairs and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. The aim is to discuss the changing role of the EU as a global health actor and contribute to a European convergence on global health action. The new EU Global Health Strategy will form the backdrop to the discussions. \nTo ensure a truly interactive meeting we will combine presentations by distinguished guests and experts with interactive group discussions involving all participants. \nWe hope that you will join us at Karolinska Institutet to carry the torch through EU presidencies of the Council of the EU\, across sectors\, governance levels and sustainability domains to cater for inclusive action for the right to health. \nProgram\nThe seminar will take place on the 9th of February 08:30-12:30 CET at Nobel Forum\, Karolinska Institutet\, Stockholm. For more information and program please visit our website ki.se/ConvergenceGlobalHealth. \nRegistration\nPlease note this invitation is personal and that the places are limited. \nHaving an open and constructive dialogue between academia\, civil society organizations (CSO)\, policy makers and other important stakeholders is decisive. The different roles of different sectors come with different responsibilities but also with different possibilities. While EU council conclusions will be drafted based on the new strategy\, universities\, and CSOs have important roles as advocates and implementers of the strategy. The engagement of universities and CSOs in global health transcends through EU presidencies and form a seedbed for sustainability.
