SUMMARY:WHA79 Fireside Chat on Global Health Awards
DESCRIPTION:Co-Hosted by the Institute of Philanthropy\, Gairdner Foundation\, Virchow Foundation\, and Prince Mahidol Award Conference Strategic Institute\nIn today’s era of intersecting crises\, from pandemics and climate disasters to economic shocks and conflicts\, the role of recognition in catalysing meaningful action has never been more vital. Beyond celebrating scientific achievement\, global health awards increasingly serve as instruments for connecting ideas to policy\, researchers to communities\, and innovation to systems resilience. \nIn a world where disruptions multiply faster than solutions\, these platforms help anchor continuity—amplifying the voices of those who champion access\, trust\, and social justice in health. \nThis discussion will unpack the critical role of recognition in motivating the next generation of leadership\, bridging disciplinary divides\, and sustaining momentum across crises. By examining how laureates mobilise influence and networks to accelerate equitable health outcomes\, the session reframes awards not as milestones of success\, but as enduring mechanisms for global solidarity and transformative impact when humanity faces unprecedented uncertainty. \nBy highlighting real examples of laureates whose work reshaped vaccine delivery\, health governance\, and equitable access\, the session underscores recognition not as an endpoint\, but as the beginning of a ripple effect—empowering collaboration\, inspiring trust\, and driving sustainable change in global health.

SUMMARY:“Migration\, displacement and health: an increasing global health priority in a changing world” during WHA 79 in Geneva
DESCRIPTION:May 19\, 2026 | 09:30-11:00 CET during the World Health Assembly in Geneva\nThe roundtable “Migration\, displacement and health: an increasing global health priority in a changing world” will bring together a small group of 25-40 participants from policy\, practice\, academia and multilateral organisations. The intention is to create a space for open and focused discussion on what is realistically actionable in the current funding and geopolitical environment. While there is increasing recognition of the importance of migration\, displacement and health\, there remains a gap between this recognition and the implementation of coherent\, scalable policy responses. The roundtable follows on from the joint open call by The Virchow Foundation and other leading health organizations in May 2025 to uphold refugee and migrant health as a global public health priority; and the side event to the World Health Summit in October 2025 (https://joint-call.org). \nThe session will be held under a Chatham House-style format and will prioritise discussion over formal presentations. It will focus in particular on identifying practical entry points for strengthening inclusion within health systems\, and on how this agenda can be sustained within broader health system and health security priorities. \nThe event is being convened by: \n\nNorwegian Institute of Public Health\nGeneva Health Forum\n4EU+ Alliance\nGeneva Centre of Humanitarian Studies\nCentre for Global Health Systems and Policy\, University College London\nVirchow Foundation\nLancet Migration
