This international and expert Council has initiated its work towards establishing the Virchow Prize for Global Health.
Berlin, 16 March 2022 – The Virchow Foundation for Global Health announces the formation of its Council, strengthening the Foundation’s mission to award the Virchow Prize for Global Health and recognize innovations of outstanding significance towards improving health and wellbeing.
The non-profit Virchow Foundation for Global Health was launched on 13 October 2021, Rudolf Virchow’s 200th birthday, with a vision to raise awareness of global health issues among the general public, while contributing to sustainable and universal improvement of health outcomes through the fulfilment of the prestigious Virchow Prize for Global Health. The first Prize ceremony will take place on 15 October 2022 in Berlin.
Comprised of leading, international experts with a shared dedication to improve health worldwide, the Council provides strategic guidance on the direction of both the Foundation and the formation of the Virchow Prize Committee. Members of the Council are committed to ensure the Foundation’s success through cross-sectoral cooperation and aligning activities with the United Nations 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
Stéphanie Seydoux, French Ambassador for Global Health and chairing the Council, states: “I am honoured to join the Council of the Virchow Foundation for Global Health. In my current role, I advocate for the health of underserved populations around the world and guide strategic policy decisions to maintain global health as a top priority for development, and on the international agenda. Not only must we not lose momentum in elevating the importance of health as a global public good, but those who have been working tirelessly towards this goal deserve recognition at the highest level. This common vision of addressing complex global health challenges, while extending the opportunity to award innovative solutions, is what we aim to achieve within the Council and through the awarding of the Virchow Prize for Global Health.”
