The nomination phase has begun for the Virchow Prize, upholding the United Nations 2030 Agenda and endowed with €500,000

Berlin, 1 April 2022 – Today marks the opening of the nomination phase of the newly established Virchow Prize for Global Health. This major international award honours outstanding achievements that address the complex health challenges we face today. The Prize is awarded annually in Berlin, with the inaugural ceremony held 15 October 2022, on the eve of the World Health Summit.

The Virchow Prize for Global Health aims to incentivize and spur great minds in their commitment to global health. Laureates of the Virchow Prize for Global Health will be awarded an endowment of €500,000 for their longstanding commitment and contributions towards improving health and well-being for all.

Eligible are individuals, organisations, or institutions who have made significant contributions towards strengthening global health through lifetime achievements – whether through long-standing academic, political, humanitarian, social, research and development or economic engagement. Specific aspects of these efforts span from contributing to the attainment of the United Nations 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), developing or implementing health-improving innovations with the potential for broad impact, and more.

Nomination for the Virchow Prize for Global Health may be submitted by any person who meets the nomination criteria and is received within the designated timeframe. This year, the nomination phase is open from 1 April 2022 through 30 June 2022. Nomination forms can be found on the Virchow Prize website and should be sent to nominations@virchow.foundation once completed.

Further information on the criteria for qualified nominators, eligibility for laureates, and the nomination process can be found at https://virchowprize.org/nominations/

Each year, the official announcement of the Virchow Prize for Global Health laureates is released on October 13, the birthday of the Prize’s namesake, Rudolf Virchow. Virchow united in one person the interdisciplinary and humanistic concept of well-being, and serves as a role model in overcoming complexity and bridging these challenges to improve health at a global scale. Laureates of the Virchow Prize for Global Health will be shining examples in striving for these ambitious efforts, while providing inspiration to the community in improving health and well-being for all.
