Berlin, October 1, 2024 – It is with great honour to share that President Bas joins the list of prominent speakers at the Virchow Prize 2024 Award Ceremony, offering a warm video welcome in her role as High Patron.
“My heartfelt congratulations to Lucy Gilson and Johan Rockström for receiving the Virchow Prize 2024! Lucy Gilson works to govern and lead health systems to ensure all people have access to good health care. Johan Rockström researches how we can live in harmony with nature to ensure our health. These topics are crucial for shaping global health policy. Moreover, both laureates align their excellent research with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. I am pleased the independent Virchow Prize Committee has made clear the importance of addressing global health issues holistically towards to creating a healthier and fairer world”, states President Bas.
The continuous support of the German Government, in the inaugural year with the esteemed high patronage of Federal President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and in 2024 for the consecutive year, with President of the German Bundestag, Bärbel Bas, as well as the active engagement of the city of Berlin underscore the significance of global health as a particularly influential compass for humanitarian, multilateral, peacebuilding, and sustainability-oriented policies. Health and global health are very complex issues, and it is crucial to nurture a holistic approach to global and planetary health challenges.
