Berlin, October 11, 2022 – It is an honour for the Virchow Foundation for Global Health to announce Peter Piot, EU Chief Scientific Advisor, Epidemics and Special Advisor on Covid-19 to the President of the European Commission and Former Director of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, to give the laudation of 2022 Virchow Prize for Global Health Laureate, John N. Nkengasong.
Peter Piot was part of the original research team that discovered the Ebola virus in Zaire in 1976 and has continued to be on the forefront of HIV and AIDS research, women’s health, and infectious diseases elimination. Peter met John Nkengasong in 1987 at a conference hosted by the University of Yaoundé. This meeting sparked a longstanding mentorship and partnership between the two in Antwerp, where Peter invited John to study the virology and immunology of unusual HIV variants. The Virchow Foundation is honoured Peter Piot will join this celebration of John N. Nkengasong and his lifelong contributions to global health.
The 2022 Virchow Prize for Global Health is held under the High Patronage of German Federal President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, on Saturday, October 15 at 18:00 CET in Berlin.
