Berlin, September 26, 2024 – It is our pleasure to publicly share that the Virchow Prize 2024 Award Ceremony will be opened by Kai Wegner, Governing Mayor of Berlin, at the Rotes Rathaus, Berlin City Hall. The international prize is awarded for a second year at the Rotes Rathaus, a historic government building from 1869 in a distinctive and special red-brick Neo-Renaissance style. The city hall is one of the most iconic symbols of Berlin’s architectural heritage.

Kai Wegner, Governing Mayor of Berlin: “Berlin attracts excellent, committed researchers from around the world. Charité Universitätsmedizin, outstanding scientific institutions, and first-class hospitals and companies make Berlin a leading international hub for healthcare and research. Close ties and cooperation among scientists, researchers, and care providers combined with a strong healthcare economy and start-up scene are Berlin’s recipe for success. The Virchow Prize Award Ceremony shows Berlin’s key role as a center of healthcare – one that thrives due to international cooperation. I am delighted by the honour of welcoming the scientific community to the Red Town Hall.

Berlin, with several hundred companies from across various health industries, is one of the most important life science locations in Germany and has become a global health hub internationally. The Governing Mayor, since his election in April 2023, has put a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration which is supported by a robust network of universities, hospitals, and research centres. With Berlin as the host of numerous international conferences and events, for example the World Health Summit (WHS), the city has become a key player in shaping the future of global health.
