Born on December 9, 1964 in Berlin; Protestant; married; two children.

1982 secondary school leaving certificate; 1983 technical college for business and administration; commercial apprenticeship until 1986.

Self-employed printer from 1986 to 2011.

Member of the SPD since 1981; 1991 to 2000 department chairman; 2000 to May 2004 chairman of the SPD Tempelhof-Schöneberg; 2004 to 2012 and 2016 to 2020 state chairman of the SPD Berlin, state party conference and district delegate; 1989 to 1996 member of the BVV Tempelhof, most recently parliamentary group chairman.

1996 to 2021 Member of the Berlin House of Representatives; 2001 to 2011 Chairman of the SPD parliamentary group.

2011 to 2014 Mayor and Senator for Urban Development and the Environment; since December 11, 2014 Governing Mayor of Berlin; 2014 to 2016 Senator for Culture; 2016 re-elected Governing Mayor of Berlin and appointed Senator for Science and Research; November 1, 2017 to October 1, 2018 President of the Bundesrat.

Member of AWO-Berlin; member of the Social Democratic Community for Local Politics (SGK).
